Component parts and sound moderators

For licensing purposes the term “firearm” is taken to include not only a complete rifle or other firearm but also any component part (any pressure bearing part of the weapon), and any removable accessory to any such weapon designed or adapted to diminish the noise or flash caused by firing the weapon, i.e. sound moderators. Possession of a sound moderator without the requisite authority on a firearm certificate would constitute an offence.

Sound moderators on shotguns are not considered to be component parts and so do not need authorisation.
